Broken Pieces by Linay- (AU, cannon) Dark AU where Kenshin is Battousai and roams the streets as a deadly assassin. Kaoru posses a special gift. Their worlds collide when they become captor and captive. This a great dark, smutty fic but it has such a strong plot and message. If you're into AU fics, or not, this is a MUST read.
My Life by Maeniel (AKA Fitz)- (AU, Cannon) In the beginning it Follows Kenshin through his life, namely college years and the story jumps around in the time-line. But eventually plot develops around Kenshin's past and college life at the dorms isn't as great as you would think or
boring. This fic got me into the AU world, and RuroKen fics in general.
Dancing Plums and 8th Grade Literature by Imbrium Iridum- (AU, Cannon, Shounen-Ai) Ken is a counselor at a school, Kaoru is a teacher and also his neighbor, Sano is the gym teacher and an old friend of Kens. Another story where Kenshin has a dark past that eventually conflicts with his "happy" life, but this story really has an original plot and the way she describes the characters, emotions and scenes are amazing.
In the Shadow of the Vampire by Psychotic Tanuki- (AU, Cannon) Kenshin is Battousai and is intent on killing the one person who could come between him and victory. Yes, this is one of those Vampire fics, but this just blows the others out of the water. PT's writing skills truly define "painting a picture with words". It's dark and angsty, but a beautiful fic all the same.
BAKUMATSU
Secrets of the Revolution by Seta-sakura- (AU) Battousai was not the only Hitokiri during the revolution --the two meet and form a bond through the bloody war around them. This is a "what if" fic --the character added introduces a slight twist to the original plot of Kenshin's past, but it's an entertaining read.
Descent into Madness by Conspirator- Kenshin comes to Kyoto shortly after leaving Hiko's side --watch him turn from a innocent youth to a feared Hitokiri. Ever wander what made Kenshin turn into the Hitokiri of his past? Conspirator fills in the blanks with her wonderful tale.
Evening Encounter by Maeniel (AKA Fitz)- (One-shot) Okita is heading home after the wars, and along the way he encounters an "enemy" from the not-so-distant past. It's another fic that fills in the blanks of Kenshin's past, not to mention Okita's life as well. Fitz's short story is a great read for those Pre-Rurouni and Okita fans.
TOKYO
As Time Goes By by MightyMightyMunson- (Cannon) Years have passed and Sano is traveling the world, Yahiko is grown, Kaoru is a mother, and Kenshin is helping the government, but all is not well. This is the most gut-wrenching fic I have ever read. Mighty hits the characters so well that it makes the fic believable, but all the more sad. Read as how the KenshinGumi fight their demons after the anime's end.
